Understanding your target market

So you have a business but do you really know and understand your target market?

Many businesses start from passion or an idea of what people need but many business owners don’t stop and do the work to find out exactly who they should be targeting. Who is most likely to want or need your product or service.

Marketing your business effectively is all about speaking to the right customers.

For example, if you own a barbershop you’ll want to target men right?
But let’s think about this and get specific here.

  • What services do you specialize in?

  • Is it styles for younger men or clean cuts for men of all ages?

  • Does your business offer affordable and quick cuts or do your barbers take their time and create masterpieces?

  • There are other barbershops in your area so how is yours different?

Now we’re beginning to touch on differentiation which we can write about in greater detail some other day but the gist is this: understanding how your product or service is unique to other similar businesses helps you hone in on a more specific target market, which in turn will help you relate and communicate more effectively to these potential customers.

Need more marketing help? We’re here to help. Start here.

As you think about what you are best at and what your offer really is you begin to understand what type of people want your services. Now that you have some idea of who you’re targeting, go ahead and complete a formal ICA exercise (ideal customer avatar) online to profile and create your ideal customer. This will force you to get really clear on who they are, what they like, what they do etc. By doing this, you’ll be able to figure out where and how you should market your product/service to them! You’ll be able to communicate with your potential customers in a language they will relate to, in places they visit/read/review/watch etc.

And these people will then RUN to give you their money!
Because what you are offering them is exactly what they are looking for.

Target away!

Much love,

Rise
